Food & Folks I Like
Alright, so the list of people in food I like is much longer than this page, and no real web page could do justice yet I think giving a page with some more information is much more loving (and in total Claire style) to do than sticking links on a “blog roll” section. This will continue to grow and morph (I sort of want to say and ferment) into a beautiful section of other places you can go to read about people out there who get that living well includes eating well. Enjoy!
Daygustation:A lovely site as obsessed with the concept of Taste as myself. We both really like muffins, too.
“He who distinguishes the true savor of his food can never be a glutton; he who does not cannot be otherwise.”– Thoreau
SFA: Southern Foodways: I am a huge fan, a member and very proud of the SFA. By far one of the most progressive and comprehensive studies of food and culture…from my south to your plate. Hop over to their site for events, dinners, conversation and even film festivals.
Y’all come back now.
“Southerners can’t stand to eat alone. If we’re going to cook a mess of greens we want to eat them with a mess of people.”
– Julia Reed
Julia Reed’s book is also a favorite… perhaps a kindered spirit:

Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns, and Other Southern Specialties:An Entertaining Life (with Recipes)
ZacharyAdamCohen: Farm to Table : A friend and all around great fellow with a show coming out that takes you from the farm to the table… intelligent and really worth visiting his sites. Also, my inspiration to trout fish in a bikini.
“High tech tomatoes. Mysterious milk. Supersquash.
Are we supposed to eat this stuff? Or is it going to eat us?”
–Annita Manning
Ana Sofia Joanes: FRESH movie: If you saw Food, Inc. (you all should kids) and even if you did not, this is another one not to be missed. Entertaining at least for those of us who do care about food and its sources.

Hudson Valley Fresh… a great farm, great animals and darn good cheese. I would buy cheese directly from the farm when I lived near by, and even became fast friends with the market sellers upstate. I recall giving them gumbo once. Good cheese gets southern love, as to most people I enjoy.
40 Farmers Under 40 Definitely worth checking out… if not for the farmers, for the conversation that follows. It is inspiring to see young people getting excited and taking action. I am very interested to see where these 40 are when they are over 40. They should still be practicing what they preach and teaching a new generation their practices and ways of living…farm to table.
Enrique Gili A fellow writer, covering “LOHAS( Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability)”… I appreciate his help and focused writing work. Linked me to good things, so I link you to him.
Bill McKibben Not only am I a big fan but he knows his stuff… completely relative to our times with his many books and talks on the economy. Worth reading, following and learning from. Seeing him speak in CO as the keynote speaker, I remember taking notes and admiring his spunk. Not one to agree and please the people he laid down real facts saying that the fight for good food (as I and hopefully most of your readers know it) was not academic, but fundamental. He is everywhere now and with good reason. When he said “We’re at the moment,” it was chilling to realize that we have to do something now; in terms of change to food policy, soil and agriculture and slowing global warming.
Food Posters : Because there is no better way to cover your apartment, guest bathroom or boring hall wall than with a poster showing every kind of stone fruit with commentary. I quite fancy the periodic table featured here as well as any of the “fruit and vegetable” ones…ignore the brand looking signs. Stick to whole foods…art imitating life a bit, eh?
Wild Man Steve Brill : This foraging fellow is great. Hands down a walking book of nature knowledge, vegan food wisdom and enough jokes to keep you entertained. Though finding elderberries, mushrooms and plenty of wild mint was enough for me! His foraging tours can be found all over. Anyone in food should take one or buy his books. Getting back to the land that has given life since the beginning is going to be part of the answer in our global food crisis(es). I have his cookbook and will happily be making plenty of the recipes, season by season… hopefully I can trust myself and with the help of his drawings in the other books… find my own foraged goodies. Also, the tours are great ways to meet like-minded individuals, welcome to children and elderly. Such a wonderful little group, I would have happily spent longer with the crew! Steve’s spirit is contagious and made me want to invest more time in wandering our native lands in the Hudson Valley…as well as my southern states. Thank you Steve!
All foraging adventures in the wild and in the common grocery store will be posted in claireeats.
CleanFish : Sustainable fish… I rate it Good to Eat & Good to Think! Ask for this at restaurants, too.
Wild Hive Farm: I was lucky enough to bake with dear Bert a few years back. Great people making a great product…that tastes and smells like bread should. They also sell their milled flours for us home bakers. I use the cornmeal regularly, especially during the fall.
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” –John Muir
Music Globization. Marty Frascogna : A friend and forward thinker from my dear ole Mississippi. Though not food, the message is the same… that a state often mocked has a bounty of talent and spirit that has feed the world musically for decades. Much in the same way I see southern food culture as a backbone of many other food movements, whether regionally or worldly. Plus, music and food just go well together. Check it out.
GoodLifer: A website after my own heart. Everyone who works on the goodlifer team really does practice what they preach with amazing spirits, happy vibes and all around a good good thing.
Paisley Farms of Upstate Farms: Michael Kokas and Jan Greer are amazing people, neighbors, friends and farmers. Beautiful produce that is not only fresh but filled with love and care. Supplying some of the best restaurants in NYC as well as maintaining CSAs in manhatten, brooklyn and locally…. join their CSA and follow the blog here!
“You, as a food buyer, have the distinct privilege of proactively participating in shaping the world your children will inherit.”–Joel Salatin Holy Cows and Hog Heaven: The Food Buyer’s Guide to Farm Friendly Food
Still Tasty.com Nothing spells bad to eat better than some food borne illness. Wasting food is not much fun either, nor is it cost effective. Lost flavor and quality can happen, too. This great site allows you to see how long you can keep almost any food good in the freezer or fridge, along with tips! Yah for storage and clean healthy organization!
Daily Candy Oh, you know you love it, too. Cute, sweet and much like myself, this website is good for on the pulse info from many cities. I read Seattle solely because it is near Vancouver and frankly covers a scene on the west coast I never great to read about with all the NY-centric media in NY. Obvious, but is always nice to see new places, new faces, new tastes…and help for planning my next trips!
